Substance abuse is often seen with people suffering from mental illness, sometimes as a way to self-medicate, sometimes as a way to escape and temporarily relieve emotional distress. It is especially prominent in people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, with about 78% of adults with BPD developing a substance use disorder or addiction at some point in their lives.
